"King of Kudzu"- Mark Barnes, Weaves Innerbanks vines into visitors Hearts! -

Mark Barnes of Washington County, is an accomplished weaver using the vines of the Inner Banks to fashion beautiful, yet functional basketry and trellises. The woods of the Inner banks has become Mark's "supply market" for kudzu ,wisteria, and grape vines to build frames and jasmine for random weave. Marks passion began while he attended John C.Campbell Folk Art School, for Mark , a old North Carolina tradition became a new way to express his artistic endeavors .

His uniquely crafted baskets soon launched his work into the

heights of national basket competitions and national TV. Last September DYI network featured Mark as he gave a studio lesson to host Jennifer Perkins . Mark taught the viewers about vines they could find in their own backyard as well as the strength and malleability of vines needed to make a basket. He demonstrated how to make the main frame to the basket and taught variations such as the God's eye technique, random weave, and ribbed weave. Mark is more then your casual weaver, he is truly a educator and scholar. He has taught several classes in basketry in North Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana. Although Mark was educated at UNC Chapel Hill, and previously the owner of  Panini's and Oxford Catering Company, he is extremely personably and down to earth. When you engage Mark in conversation you will find he transcends his work by expounding the every history of the vine he crafts as he carefully studies the form his basket takes while he runs each vine through the carefully bent frame. What is even more facinating is how contagious Mark's love of basketry can be.
